What Hypnosis Is and Is Not

Hypnosis is a relaxed and focused state of mind. It's not being unconscious, going to sleep, or having no control. Contrary to what you may have seen on TV, in a movie, or in a stage hypnosis show, you cannot be persuaded to do something against your will when hypnotized.

Hypnosis is often exaggerated on TV or in movies to make it entertaining. Stage hypnotists choose volunteers for their shows who are more susceptible to hypnosis, and more importantly, who are willing to follow directions in front of an audience.

You've actually been in a hypnotic state many times. For example, when you are watching TV and you feel zoned out. You could get up if you wanted to, but you choose not to. Driving a familiar route can also put you in a light trance.

When you are hypnotized by a hypnotist, how you feel during the process is up to you; he or she cannot make you be hypnotized. But generally, if you follow his or her directions, trust the process, and allow yourself to let go, you will feel deeply relaxed. You will also remember everything that happened, and you will be able to edit your words and control your actions just as in normal, waking consciousness.

Hypnosis is ideal for getting beyond the conscious mind and accessing your subconscious knowledge. The hypnotic state is also excellent for giving suggestions to the mind for reaching goals and breaking habits.
